Direct continuation to Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 despite being the third entry in the Wario Land series.
Captain Syrup, along with three of her Pirate Gooms, infiltrate and flood Wario's castle while he is sleeping to steal his treasure, prompting Wario to vow revenge and take his treasure back.
The game is notable for removing the last remnants of Mario (Series)-like gameplay elements, like floating blocks and Power-Ups, replacing them with Transformations. The game also removed lives and health completely, making Wario effectively immortal. Finally, it marks the beginning of Wario's redesign of wearing a Short Sleeves Yellow Shirt instead of his prior Long Sleeves, which will be slowly adopted across the entire Mario (Series) franchise.
