A social custom in which a drink (usually of Alcohol) is taken to honor a person or to celebrate an occasion. A toast may involve two people touching their drinking glasses together, or simply raising their glasses in the air.
A toast is often accompanied by a verbal expression, such as "Cheers!" in English, "Prost!" in German, or "Kanpai!" in Japanese.
