Also known as: 狐, キツネ, きつね
Foxes are small-to-medium-sized omnivorous mammals belonging to various genera within the Canidae family, but, strictly speaking, the term refers to the species classified as “true” foxes (genus Vulpes), especially the "red fox" species (Vulpes vulpes).
Foxes are best known for their bushy tails and pointed snouts, as well as their curious and playful behavior.
Foxes are very important to Japanese folklore, being the center of the Kitsune myths, often being depicted with multiple tails - up to a total of nine.
Young foxes are called kits.
