Sixth game of the Touhou series and the first for the Windows generation, released 11 August 2002 after a 4-year hiatus. A remake, Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic - the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, released in September 2026 with redrawn artwork and sprites in the style of the original.
One summer day Gensokyo was suddenly enveloped in a scarlet mist, blotting out the sun and turning the land into a cold wasteland. Miko Hakurei Reimu and witch Kirisame Marisa investigate the cause - a mysterious entity known as the "Scarlet Devil".
Preceded by Mystic Square and followed by Perfect Cherry Blossom.
