In 1982, an Alien Spacecraft appears above Johannesburg, South Africa. After the aliens on board are discovered to be refugees, the government sets up an internment camp below the ship, designated District 9, that over time turns into a slum.
The setting of the film was inspired by the Apartheid regime of South Africa from the 1940s to 1990s.
