About Zastava M56

Also known as: M56短機関銃

The Zastava M56 is a blowback Submachine Gun of Yugoslav origin, chambered in 7.62×25mm Tokarev round, designed for use with the Yugoslav People's Army. Initially a state-funded product, it was later produced by Zastava Arms and introduced in 1961. It saw use in a number of conflicts following the breakup of former Yugoslavia. The M56's external design is based on the captured MP40, both Weapons featuring an underfolding stock, but easily distinguished from the MP40 by its increased length, charging handle on the right side, curved magazine (32-round is its standard capacity), and Bayonet attachment support. It has similarities with the PPS Submachine Gun.

Inexpensive and simple to produce and maintain, the M56 also proved to be quite effective at range over its German counterpart due to its 7.62×25mm cartridge having significantly higher velocity than the 9×19mm.
