Shogun is a 2024 American historical drama television series created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks that aired on FX, Hulu, Disney+ and Hotstar. Based on the 1975 novel by James Clavell which was previously adapted into 5 episode miniseries that aired in 1980 on NBC, the series is a historical fiction based real life historical figures in 1600 Japan.
John Blackthorne, an English nagvitor based on William Adams, the first Englishman to arrived in Japan, along with his Dutch crew of the trade ship Erasmus arrives to Japan after a perilous journey, hoping to break the trade monopoly that the Portuguese have with Japan. Blackthorne's arrival catches the attention of Daimyo Yoshii Toranaga, based on Tokugawa Ieyasu (Real Life), who uses the Englishman in his plan against his rivals, who fears he is gaining power to become the next Shogun. Toranaga assigns his servant Lady Toda Mariko, a Japanese Christian noblewoman as Blackthorne's translator and learn more of the world outside of Japan.
