A thistle-like flower in the Asteraceae family. Safflowers range in color from yellow to red.
It is one of the oldest cultivated crops and was historically used as a red dye and food coloring. Its Japanese name, ベニバナ (beni-bana), literally means "lipstick/rouge flower".
