Louisiana (French: Louisiane; Louisiana Creole: Lwizyàn) is a state in the Southern United States of America. Its counties are called parishes (French: Paroisses; Creole: pawas). The state borders Texas to the west, Arkansas to the north, and Mississippi to the east. Its capital is Baton Rouge and its largest city is New Orleans (French: Nouvelle-Órleans; Creole: Nouvèl Orleans)

Famous foods of Louisiana are Gumbo, jambalaya, crawfish boil, king cake (French: gallette des rois), beignets, étoufée, and boudin. One famous holiday that Louisiana is heavily associated with in the public consciousness is Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) which is celebrated in late winter/early spring.
