The most common writing system in Korean today is Hangul (also known as Chosongul in the North), a syllabic alphabet, but in the past Chinese characters were used to represent words as well (referred to as Hanja), whether exclusively or mixed with Hangul. There are also ways to romanize Korean, generally referred to as Romaja.
