A 1984 film and manga series (1982-1994) by Miyazaki Hayao. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where most of the land is covered by a toxic fungal forest inhabited by giant insects.
The film was produced by Topcraft, which would later be reformed as Studio Ghibli, so it is often considered the first Ghibli film.
The manga series has a more expanded world and storyline. The storyline of the film corresponds with roughly the first two of the seven manga volumes.
