Jem, also known as Jem and the Holograms, is an American animated musical television series created by Christy Marx that ran from 1985 to 1988 for three seasons. The series follows Jerrica Benton, the new owner of her late father's record company, as she forms a rock band called the Holograms as her alter ego, Jem (Jem And The Holograms), thanks to an intelligent Holographic Supercomputer named Synergy. As the Holograms go on adventures and a quest to success, they face rivalry from the punk rock band, the Misfits, led by Phyllis "Pizzazz" Gabor, who is under their manager, Eric Raymond, a greedy business man who wants to take over Jerrica's company. The series is famous for its 80s fashion, MTV style music videos and romance.
The series also has a comic book adaptation set in the 2010s by IDW publishing, which ran from 2015 to 2017.
A modern live action movie adaptation directed by Jon M. Chu was released in 2015. However, it was negatively received by both fans and critics for its angsty teen drama, straying too far from the source material as well as original series fan content being manipulated into reaction to the in-film characters. It was also a box office bomb which led the movie being removed from theaters after two weeks.
