About Fish Mint (Plant)

Also known as: ドクダミ, 蕺草, 鱼腥草, 魚腥草

Houttuynia cordata is a Flowering plant native to moist and shady regions of Southeast Asia. The plant has many common names, some of which are: chameleon plant, Chinese lizard tail, fish leaf, fish mint, fish wort, heart leaf, and rainbow plant.

The flowers have four to six petals with a tall spike in the center, although the "petals" are actually bracts (petal-like leaves) and the true flowers grow on the spike. The leaves are cordate (heart-shaped).

Houttuynia is used in cooking and medicine throughout Asia. The leaves have a fishy smell and taste, earning the plant one of its common names, fish mint.
