About Fender Mustang

Also known as: フェンダー・ムスタング, ムスタング(ギター)

Solid body Electric Guitar created and manufactured by American Instrument maker Fender in 1964 as a major redesign of their student models, the Musicmaster and Duo-Sonic with the revised versions having the "II" suffix. The Mustang obtained relatively moderate success as a student Guitar until its discontinuation in 1982. Since 1990, in parallel with its reissue, the Mustang has experienced a massive resurgence in popularity, quickly becoming a cult favorite in the 90s Grunge scene due to its low cost and ease of modding. Nirvana's Kurt Cobain is most associated with the guitar, having used a humbucker version.

After its reissue, it also acquired a cult following in Japan, being a frequent guitar used in both J-Pop and J-Rock. In Japanese animation, Nakano Azusa from K-On! is the most prominent player, using a Fender Japan '69 Reissue Mustang in Candy Apple Red, nicknamed "Muttan".

Unique visual traits include a round skewed body design, tilted double single-coil pickups on standard models, floating bridge, round pickguard and a chrome control plate.

Visually similar versions of the Mustang include:

  • Musicmaster / Musicmaster II
  • Duo-Sonic / Duo-Sonic II
  • Bronco
  • Cyclone
  • Jag-Stang
