Latin: Balearica pavonina
Almost identical to its cousin the Grey Crowned Crane, the rarer black crowned crane has a black neck (rather than slate-grey), pinkish-white cheeks (rather than white), and a pink throat pouch (rather than red).
Both species have a crown of stiff yellow feathers that radiate from the back of the head.
