The Union Pacific Big Boy is a type of an articulated 4-8-8-4 Steam Locomotive manufactured by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) between 1941 and 1944. Operated in revenue service by the Union Pacific Railroad to haul heavy freight runs until their retirement in 1962. Of 25 built, 8 were preserved, with one (Union Pacific 4014) restored to operational status for excursions. They are the largest steam locomotives ever built and operated in history.
