In China, the animal became popular because of the Grass Mud Horse Meme in 2009, in which a writer claimed a photoshopped photo of an alpaca was called the "Grass Mud Horse" (Cǎo Ní Mǎ, a phrase that sounds similar to "fuck your mother").
