Also known as: 亞北ネル, 亚北音留, AkitaNeru, レンネル, neru
Akita Neru is a Vocaloid character, originally fanmade, now recognized as an official derivative of Hatsune Miku by Crypton. Her design was created by Smith Hioka in 2007.
She started out as a meme on 2channel, when a troll user started spamming all Vocaloid related threads. Some user commented that he wouldn't get angry only if the troll was a cute girl. Thus Akita Neru, a Tsundere non-Vocaloid net-chara was born. Her name came from the trolls' comments "I'm tired" (飽きた, Akita) and "going to sleep" (寝る, Neru).
Her image color is orange-ish yellow and her character item is a Cellphone. Neru is written by some as a Miku wannabe, by others as the anti-hero of the Vocaloid personage. She has been officially recognized as a Miku derivative by Crypton since 2008, and most vocal representations of Neru uses Miku's voicebank, such as those by Ohshio Kuimu (though some producers use Rin's voicebank, ala NanameueP, and some fans use the phone noises from Triple Baka).
In the West, she's largely remembered for her appearance in Triple Baka (Vocaloid). She would once more return to prominence in 2024 as a result of a meme relating to Mesmerizer (Vocaloid), due to a reply to a tweet reminiscing about Triple Baka, where Neru was called "the yellow one that doesn't appear in Mesmerizer". The wave of Neru fanart that followed would culminate in SWAGAMICCHI's fan design for what Neru could've looked like in Mesmerizer. She would have her first major song in years in 2025, with Zako (Vocaloid).
