In Tolkien'S Legendarium, Morgoth, meaning "Black Foe" or "Dark Enemy", was the name that the Elves gave to Melkor, the divine spirit that rebelled against the god Eru Iluvatar and became the original source of evil in the world. After his defeat, his role as Dark Lord was taken over by his trusted servant Sauron.
