A person who investigates crimes and looks into records. They are either employed by the Police or by a private individual. Police detectives are commonly depicted with a Police Badge.
Sherlock Holmes is one of the most well-known detectives in fiction and thus influences the traditional detective's outfit, consisting of a Deerstalker hat, a Capelet, and a Smoking Pipe and Magnifying Glass. In Film Noir, private investigators often wear a Fedora and a Trench Coat.
