About Adonis (Flower)

Also known as: フクジュソウ, 福寿草

A genus of about 20-30 species of Flowering plants of the Buttercup (Flower) family, Ranunculaceae, native to Europe and Asia. Their flowers are red, yellow or orange and have 5-30 petals with feathery, finely divided leaves that form a fluffy collar around each individual flower.

Commonly depicted members of the genus are Adonis amurensis, a perennial plant with a yellow double-flower that has around 20-24 petals each, and Adonis ramosa. Their Japanese name "Fukujusō" means "fortune-longevity-plant", so they’re also used for planting at New Year's parties.
