A form of physical punishment in which a bundle of leafless twigs bound together, called a birch rod, is used to strike a person's buttocks, back, or shoulders.
Despite being named a birch rod, the rod is composed of several twigs bundled together and does not have to be composed of Birch Tree twigs.
