The baju kurung is a traditional Malay outfit commonly worn by women in Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia (especially in Sumatra), and Singapore. It consists of:
- A long-sleeved, loose-fitting blouse that extends to the knees or below, often with a high neckline.
- A matching long skirt (called kain or sarong), typically pleated or with a wraparound design.
The design prioritizes modesty and comfort, making it a popular choice for school uniforms, formal occasions, and religious events. While traditionally made from cotton or silk, modern versions come in various fabrics and colors, often decorated with embroidery or patterns.
